Illegal Immigrant Just Won a U.S. Election?!

The political establishment in St. Paul, Minnesota, just got turned upside down. Kaohly Her, a sitting state representative who once admitted she’s an “illegal immigrant,” pulled off an upset that stunned even her supporters — unseating Mayor Melvin Carter, her former boss, in a race no one saw coming.

Her’s victory marks the first time a woman has been elected mayor of St. Paul, and it comes with controversy already baked in. Her made national headlines earlier this year when she publicly declared on the Minnesota House floor, “And so I am illegal in this country. My parents are illegal here in this country.”

That bombshell admission sparked outrage across social media and prompted calls from state lawmakers for an investigation into her immigration status and eligibility to hold office. But that didn’t stop left-wing voters in one of Minnesota’s bluest cities from handing her the keys to City Hall.

A Stunning Political Reversal

The election results were decided after ranked-choice ballots were tallied, propelling Her past Carter and two other challengers. The result left many political observers speechless, especially given that Carter — a Democrat incumbent and longtime ally of Sen. Amy Klobuchar — had once hired Her as his policy aide.
