Her remarks, which quickly ignited backlash online, have been seen as yet another example of far-left Democrats failing to grasp Trump’s popularity with voters. Despite their relentless attacks, the former president has only gained ground, including in Omar’s own home state of Minnesota. Trump closed the gap against Kamala Harris to just four points, narrowing the seven-point margin from 2020. He even managed to flip the home county of Gov. Tim Walz, the Democrat’s running mate.
But according to Omar, none of that matters. Instead, she attributes Trump’s political success to a so-called “dumbing down” of the electorate.

“The fact that these people are allowed to say the most ridiculous things tells you that the dumbing of the United States has arrived, because how else did we get the Trump presidency again?” she asked Hasan.
Conservative voices were quick to fire back. Influencer Matt Walsh called out the Minnesota lawmaker for her ongoing attacks on the nation that welcomed her after she fled war-torn Somalia.
“It continues to amaze me that Ilhan Omar has such contempt for our country. She comes from Somalia, where the average IQ is 68 (likely due at least in part to the prevalence of in-breeding in her culture). It also consistently ranks as one of the most violent and dangerous and poorest countries on Earth. Yet she looks at our country with snobbish disdain,” Walsh posted on X.
Omar’s comments come as she faces renewed scrutiny over longstanding allegations regarding her marriage history. A member of Minnesota’s Somali community recently came forward with claims that Omar secretly married her brother to help him stay in the U.S. According to reports, she allegedly concealed the nature of the marriage by seeking out a Catholic priest to officiate the ceremony rather than a Muslim cleric, as she had done with her first husband.
Despite previously calling the claims “baseless, absurd” and accusing critics of Islamophobia, the allegations are gaining traction. The New York Post recently reported that the FBI is investigating Omar’s marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, with a “trove of documents” reportedly handed over to agents. If found guilty of falsifying a marriage for immigration purposes, she could face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Meanwhile, Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) is leading a push to have Omar removed from the country entirely. Earlier this month, he launched a petition calling for her deportation, citing her history of anti-American rhetoric and recent remarks advising illegal immigrants on how to evade capture by ICE.
“America would be a better place if Ilhan Omar were deported back to Somalia,” Gill wrote in an email to supporters.
As controversy continues to swirl around the Minnesota congresswoman, it’s clear that her words and actions are doing little to endear her to the American public. Instead, she finds herself once again at the center of a firestorm, with calls for accountability growing louder by the day.
