One of the unspent shell casings had the words “ANTI-ICE” scrawled across it in blue ink, Patel confirmed online, even posting a photo of the disturbing evidence.
“While the investigation is ongoing, an initial review of the evidence shows an idealogical motive behind this attack (see photo below). One of the unspent shell casings recovered was engraved with the phrase ‘ANTI ICE.’ More updates will be forthcoming,” Patel wrote.
An ICE spokesperson reported that the gunman launched the assault from a nearby rooftop, aiming directly into the facility’s sally port where ICE vehicles and personnel pass through daily.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed the grim toll.
“There was a shooting this morning at the Dallas ICE Detention Facility,” Noem stated on X. “Details are still emerging but we can confirm there were multiple injuries and fatalities. The shooter is deceased by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”
Despite the heavy gunfire, officials confirmed no ICE agents or law enforcement officers were among the casualties.
“The obsessive attack on law enforcement, particularly ICE, must stop. I’m praying for everyone hurt in this attack and for their families,” Vice President JD Vance posted.
Rothrock described the attack as “targeted violence” and said investigators are examining how long the suspect had been planning the assault.
DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughin, speaking on Fox News, noted the Dallas facility had already been the focus of threats in recent months.
“So this location, it looks like it’s been targeted, and we don’t know how long this individual has been planning this act,” McLaughin said. “It looks like he could have been watching to look at the processing and see what happens on a day-to-day basis at this Dallas field office.”
She also urged critics of ICE to tone down heated rhetoric before more lives are lost.
“We don’t want to get anyone killed,” she said firmly.
Patel condemned the attack and promised justice:
“These despicable, politically motivated attacks against law enforcement are not a one-off. It has to end and the FBI and our partners will lead these investigative efforts to see to it that those who target our law enforcement are pursued and brought to the fullest extent of justice,” Patel said.
