“Most importantly, you have to believe that you’re worth the work, or you’ll never be able to get sober. But I often do think of the profound consequences of failure here,” Hunter said.
“Maybe it’s the ultimate test for a recovering addict — I don’t know,” he continued. “I have always been in awe of people who have stayed clean and sober through tragedies and obstacles few people ever face. They are my heroes, my inspiration.”
If Hunter makes a mistake, it may have a big effect on the president’s reelection campaign. Republicans are interested in following Hunter’s battles with drug and alcohol abuse. “I have something much bigger than even myself at stake. We are in the middle of a fight for the future of democracy.”
Hunter told Axios that his first duty to his family and himself is to “make it through that fight clean and sober,” and he acknowledged a responsibility to “everyone struggling through their own recovery to succeed.”
Hunter has struggled with substance misuse, including drinking alcohol and using crack cocaine, which has led to several stays in treatment. Despite Hunter’s prior attempts to address his drug issues, his personal struggles have been politically used to cast doubt on the morality and judgment of the Biden family.

“Embrace the state in which you came into recovery — which is that feeling of hopelessness which forces you into a choice,” Hunter said. “And then understand that what is required is that you basically have to change everything.”
Hunter’s business activities in China have come under heavy Republican criticism. Allegations indicate that he took use of his father’s political connections for his own financial gain, particularly via a Chinese private equity vehicle. Wider worries about possible conflicts of interest within the Biden family have been stoked by these allegations. Direct proof, however, of Joe Biden’s involvement in his son’s commercial ventures is still lacking.
