In a stunning late-night vote that sent shockwaves through conservative circles, a bloc of House Republicans joined forces with Democrats to torpedo an amendment aimed at reining in what many on the Right see as runaway judicial activism in Washington, D.C. The proposal, authored by Rep. Chip Roy of Texas, would have stripped funding from courts and judges conservatives say have repeatedly worked to undermine the will of voters and the authority of a duly elected president.
The amendment was introduced as part of the fiscal year 2026 appropriations process and targeted the powerful D.C. District Court and D.C. Circuit Court—jurisdictions that often handle the most politically sensitive cases in the nation. Specifically, Roy’s measure would have reduced the courts’ overall budgets by 20 percent and eliminated staff and office funding for two judges who have drawn intense criticism from the Right: James Boasberg and Deborah Boardman.
Taking to the House floor, Roy made his case directly, framing the issue as one of accountability and constitutional balance. He warned that the judiciary has increasingly drifted away from its proper role and toward policymaking driven by personal ideology rather than the law.
