Beto O’Rourke may have blown his own Texas Senate chances in 2020 when he famously declared, “Hell yes, we’re going to take your AR-15.” Now, Texas Democrats have picked a new nominee—and he’s giving Bible Belt voters a reason to recoil: James Talarico recently told a podcast that God is nonbinary.
On March 19, Talarico appeared on The Bulwark, a podcast that kicked off by asking, and we are not making this up, about the size of God’s anatomy. Talarico’s response? He doubled down on a 2021 statement from the Texas House floor that “God is nonbinary.”
“I know that I was being provocative with that comment,” Talarico admitted.
Then he went further.
“While it’s maybe provocative politically, I don’t think it’s controversial theologically,” he said, adding, “most Christians believe that God is beyond gender.” He even cited the Apostle Paul to defend his position.
