Ford Motor Company has managed to do what few automakers ever have. It shattered its own recall record and did it in a way that left hundreds of thousands of drivers effectively stranded during one of the coldest stretches of winter.

As brutal winter storms hammer the northern United States and Canada, Ford has ordered nearly half a million drivers to stop using a critical piece of cold weather equipment with no immediate fix in sight.
The result is a growing backlash from owners who feel abandoned at the worst possible moment.
Ford Tells 451,000 Drivers to Stop Using Block Heaters Immediately
Ford recently announced a massive recall involving 451,485 vehicles across the U.S. and Canada, warning drivers not to use their engine block heaters because they pose a serious fire risk.
Block heaters are not optional accessories in northern climates. In subzero temperatures, they are often the difference between an engine starting or becoming a frozen block of metal.
Ford’s instructions were blunt. Owners were told to stop using the heaters immediately.
