Maher, known for his sharp critiques of political extremes on both sides, used the podcast to highlight how far-left policies alienate mainstream Americans. Citing examples, he referenced the NAACP’s controversial travel advisory warning Black Americans to avoid Florida, a state governed by Republican Ron DeSantis.
“The NAACP last year issued a travel advisory,” Maher explained. “You know where they issued a travel advisory for Black people not to go? Florida. Every day there are stories like that, where that just makes people roll their eyes and go, ‘Are you people nuts?’”
Maher added that these symbolic gestures often fail to resonate with the general public, instead generating skepticism about the priorities of progressive leaders. “Even if they don’t matter that much, I don’t think one person listened to this and thought, ‘I can’t go to Florida.’ But they just suggest something to the average person,” Maher said.
The discussion took a sharp turn when Maher tackled one of the most contentious far-left claims. “Do you really think men can get pregnant?” he asked. “I understand that a trans [man] can get pregnant. That’s different from a man getting pregnant. And the way they insist on blurring that line, as if that’s some sort of reasonable social cause, as opposed to just being for having full rights, respect, and protection for trans people. We get that!”

Fonda deflected, claiming she had never heard anyone make such assertions, a statement that rang hollow to many. Critics argue that as someone deeply embedded in progressive activism, Fonda is well aware of the positions and rhetoric of the far left.
Fonda has long been associated with left-wing activism, dating back to her infamous Vietnam War protests, which earned her the moniker “Hanoi Jane.” Over the decades, she has consistently aligned herself with progressive causes, making her claims of ignorance particularly hard to believe.
The interview underscores a growing divide within the Democratic Party between moderates and the far left. Figures like Maher are increasingly vocal about the damage extreme ideologies are doing to the party’s appeal among average voters. Meanwhile, prominent activists like Fonda appear unwilling—or unable—to address these critiques head-on.

Fonda’s refusal to acknowledge far-left policies highlights a broader trend among some progressives: denying the existence of controversial ideas to shield themselves from accountability. Whether intentional or not, her dismissive responses only serve to deepen the divide within the left and alienate moderate voters who are critical to winning elections.
As the 2024 election cycle looms, debates like this will likely continue to dominate headlines, forcing public figures like Fonda to confront the consequences of their political stances—or continue pretending they don’t exist.
