In a stunning development that sent shockwaves through the sports world, the FBI launched one of the most sweeping corruption takedowns in basketball history—arresting over 30 individuals, including NBA stars and coaches, in a multi-state operation linked to organized crime and illegal gambling.
The investigation, years in the making, has ripped the lid off what agents are calling a “historic criminal enterprise” that tied professional basketball insiders to the Mafia.
At dawn on Thursday, FBI agents fanned out across 11 states, executing raids that resulted in the arrests of several high-profile figures in professional basketball—including Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, and former NBA player Damon Jones.
FBI Director Kash Patel didn’t mince words in describing the scale of the operation. “It’s not hundreds of dollars. It’s not thousands of dollars. It’s not tens of thousands of dollars. It’s not even millions of dollars. We’re talking about tens of millions of dollars in fraud and theft and robbery across a multi-year investigation,” Patel said at a New York press conference.
