Dr. Anthony Fauci and Mayor Muriel Bowser embarked on a crusade through the streets of Washington, D.C. last year in an unusual effort to persuade the vaccine-wary while navigating the maze of a pandemic-affected city. Snippets of their inspirational voyage, which were recorded for a PBS program, show the tough pair unwavering in their pursuit of public health despite fierce opposition from locals who questioned the vaccine’s safety and efficacy.
Dr. Fauci and Mayor Bowser had an unexpected experience when they went deep into southeast Washington, a community that is largely Black and has poor immunization rates. Residents’ convictions remained unwavering while the former Chief Medical Adviser to the President fervently pushed them to accept the vaccination.

A mother admits to not having had her Covid-19 immunization yet while standing with her kids on their front door. Mayor Bowser highlights repeatedly the value of being vaccinated to protect her family from the illness.
“We gotta get you vaccinated… if you were to get infected, you could pass it on to them,” Fauci said.
Then he lied to the woman, telling her that by getting vaccinated, she would be “protecting” her family by not spreading the disease.
However, despite our initial optimism, new research shows that the vaccination is ineffective at shielding against infection and slowing viral propagation.
Another resident of the same house refuted Fauci’s assertions, claiming, “I heart [the vaccine] doesn’t cure it, and it doesn’t stop you from getting it.”
Fauci responded with further inaccuracies and misstatements, claiming, “On the very very very rare chance that you do get [Covid], even if you’re vaccinated, it’s a very – you don’t even feel sick.”
Another guy Fauci met while on his vaccination-promotional trip voiced doubt about the shot, stating, “The people in America are not settled with the information that’s been given. to us right now. So I’m not going to be lining up taking a shot or a vaccination for something that wasn’t clear in the first place.”
“And then you all create a shot in miraculous time,” He went on to challenge the timing for the development of the vaccine. “It takes years to create vaccinations.”
“Nine months is definitely not enough for nobody to be taking no vaccination that you all came up with,” he added.
Bowser intervened and said, “The only reason I’m talking to you right now, as close as we are, is that I’ve been vaccinated. If thousands of people like you don’t get vaccinated, you’re going to let this virus continue to percolate in this country and in this world.”
“Something like the common flu then, right?” the man said.
“When you start talking about paying people to get vaccinated, when you start talking about incentivizing things to get people vaccinated, it’s something else going on with that,” he added.
He shamed the individual for not being vaccinated and safeguarding those around him, saying, “Y’all’s campaign is about fear. It’s about inciting fear in people. Y’all attack people with fear.”
