The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is set to slash flight capacity at 40 of America’s busiest airports starting Friday, citing a worsening shortage of air traffic controllers — a crisis that has deepened under the Democrat-led government shutdown.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford announced the drastic move during a Wednesday press conference, confirming that thousands of FAA employees have now gone a full month without pay. The reduction, they said, is a necessary step to “preserve safety” as the Biden administration’s shutdown drags on with no resolution in sight.
Officials plan to release the full list of affected airports Thursday. According to ABC News, the FAA will begin cutting flights by roughly 4 percent on Friday, ramping up to 10 percent over the weekend. The restrictions will apply between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., the hours when air traffic is heaviest.
While international routes will be spared, domestic travelers should brace for major delays and cancellations across the nation. The FAA says the order is still being finalized, but sources warn that the country’s largest travel hubs — including those in New York, Chicago, and Atlanta — are likely to feel the brunt of the impact.
