Experts note that there are several ways for undocumented immigrants to exploit gaps in the housing laws in the US. Removing squatters can be more challenging when tenant protection laws are involved.
“We have masses coming in. They’re going to be looking for places to live. And if we don’t have the housing for them, if they’re coming in with no money, they can’t rent the traditional way,” Fox News quoted Flash Shelton, the creator of SquatterHunters.com and the United Handyman Association.

Shelton removed squatters from his mother’s home in 2019 by employing creative strategies, and he has since become an advocate for others who must undertake the challenging task of clearing a property of those who would rather stay.
Tenant rights laws vary depending on whether they are municipal or state legislation. To evict someone, many jurisdictions require a civil litigation procedure, which is cumbersome and time-consuming.
When undocumented immigrants discover they have squatter rights, “our squatter situation is going to go beyond control,” Shelton said.
