A peaceful Saturday evening on the North Carolina coast turned into chaos when a gunman opened fire on diners at a popular waterfront restaurant, leaving three people dead and eight others injured. The attack happened in Southport’s Yacht Basin area, a place usually known for tourists, live music, and family gatherings.

City officials confirmed that the shooter approached by boat late Saturday night, fired into the crowd, and then escaped using the Intracoastal Waterway. As of the latest update, police say a person of interest has been detained for questioning but have not released further details about their identity or possible motive.
The first public warning came from city officials themselves. At 9:53 p.m., the City of Southport posted an urgent alert to its Facebook page:
“There are reports of an active shooter in the Southport Yacht Basin. There is an unknown number of injuries. Avoid the area and remain in your homes. Please report any suspicious activity immediately to 911.”
