“Did We Win?”: Damar Hamlin’s First Words after Cardiac Arrest

Damar Hamlin, an NFL defensive back, suffered a heart arrest during a game on Tuesday, leaving his life in question. Thankfully, by Friday, he had miraculously recovered enough to converse with his team and is now capable of breathing on his own. The tale of this young man demonstrates the tenacity of the human spirit in the face of hardship.

During a crucial Monday night game against the Cincinnati Bengals, Buffalo Bills player Hamlin unexpectedly collapsed on the field as he was making a tackle. Medical professionals responded immediately and without hesitation to his emergency situation, conducting crucial CPR techniques until he was rapidly transported in an ambulance to the nearest medical facilities.

As the team mourned for their injured teammate Hamlin, genuine anguish permeated the stadium. They bowed their heads in prayer in a solemn act of unity and respect as they awaited updates on his condition, but sadly to no effect. Both teams came to the decision to call off the game out of concern for their friend’s welfare.

The 24-year-old professional football player woke up after a tough game wondering if they had won. Before dozing off once more, he scrawled down three words in an effort to come up with a solution.

Yes, Damar, his doctors at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center answered. The game of life is yours.

At a news conference on Thursday, Dr. Timothy Pritts declared, “Not only are the lights on, but he’s home.”

“He continues to be critically ill and undergo care in the ICU,” warned Pritts. “He still has significant progress he needs to make. This marks a turning point in his ongoing care.”

The Buffalo Bills tweeted an update on the health of their cherished player on Friday morning, stating, “According to the doctors at UCMC, Damar’s breathing tube was withdrawn overnight. His rehabilitation continues to make astonishing strides. He can communicate with his family and care staff and his neurologic function is unaffected.

The Bills tight end was finally able to FaceTime his squad after a long and tense night, giving the team some hope after a tumultuous season. His breathing tube had been taken out over night, so he could finally take part in their Friday morning meeting.

He spoke a new set of three words as though they held a profound mystery.

“Love you boys.”
