Democrats appear determined to relearn a painful political lesson the hard way.
Just a few years after the party was badly burned by the “defund the police” movement, progressive lawmakers are once again embracing a radical slogan that previously helped Republicans flip seats and dominate campaign messaging. This time, the rallying cry is “Abolish ICE”—and GOP strategists can barely hide their excitement.
The renewed push comes as progressive Democrats seize on recent events to revive long-standing hostility toward Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Rather than focusing on border security reforms or enforcement oversight, the left is dusting off a phrase that polls terribly in swing districts and instantly triggers voter concerns about chaos, lawlessness, and open borders.
That reality hasn’t stopped Rep. Shri Thanedar from moving forward. The Michigan Democrat confirmed he plans to introduce legislation aimed at eliminating ICE altogether.
“ICE is totally out of control, and this week I intend to introduce a bill to abolish ICE,” Thanedar stated.
