In a surprising shift, New York, a traditionally deep blue state, has taken steps to address its illegal immigration crisis, signaling what many are calling the “Trump Effect.” This comes as several blue states have openly resisted federal immigration policies, but New York’s actions indicate a stark departure from the norm.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has confirmed the closure of two high-profile “migrant hotels,” the Hotel Merit in Manhattan and the Quality Inn JFK in Queens. These closures are just the beginning, with an additional 10 shelters set to shut down statewide by the end of the year, weeks before Donald Trump officially resumes the presidency.

Since 2022, New York City has provided shelter for over 220,000 illegal migrants and asylum seekers, according to Mayor Adams. To put this into perspective, that number is nearly half the population of Albany, the state’s capital. The city’s largest migrant shelter, located on Randall’s Island and designed to house up to 3,000 people, is slated for closure by February.
