Ethan Hawke recently took the stage at the Sundance Film Festival and made a startling declaration: America isn’t the land of free speech anymore.
Promoting his new action movie The Weight, Hawke told reporters he’s never felt more afraid to voice his opinions publicly.
“I never felt scared about what I was going to say until the last couple years,” he told Variety.
He described a “fear in the air” that he claims has never existed before and suggested that being an artist in the United States no longer feels like living in a free country.
But here’s the twist: this is the same Ethan Hawke who spent years criticizing Donald Trump as “selfish and greedy,” bashing the Oscars for not being politically correct enough, and demanding Hollywood scale back movies with guns. Now, suddenly, he’s worried about free speech.
