The latest unrest broke out in the eastern Cuban city of Morón, located in the province of Ciego de Ávila roughly 250 miles from Havana. Videos circulating online show large crowds gathering outside the local headquarters of the ruling Communist Party as tensions boiled over among residents who say they have endured months of worsening living conditions.
The demonstrations began as a nighttime march through the city’s darkened streets. With power outages becoming a daily reality for many Cubans, protesters could be heard chanting a familiar rallying cry that has echoed throughout the island in recent years.
“Libertad.”
That single word, meaning “freedom,” rang out as demonstrators expressed their frustration with the communist regime and the ongoing economic crisis gripping the island nation.
As the crowd swelled, the demonstration escalated into direct action against the local party office. Footage from the scene shows protesters storming the building, dragging furniture outside, and attempting to ignite fires around the structure.
