Vice President Biden’s son Hunter’s international business contact must be made public, according to House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY). Find out what the records say about Hunter’s advocacy on behalf of Burisma, a Ukrainian energy business.
The Oversight and Accountability Committee takes a risk by asking the National Archives to make unredacted data available in a letter dated X. This request requests complete openness, in contrast to the already published documents on their website, which are heavily redacted.
“Complete versions of the records are relevant to the Committee’s investigation of the Biden family,” The letter makes this point, noting instances such when Eric Scherwin, a friend of the Biden family, wrote to Kate Bedingfield in the Vice President’s Office and suggested phrases the White House could use if questioned about Hunter Biden’s lobbying on behalf of Burisma. Bedingfield responded later that day, “VP signed off on this.”
Devon Archer, a former business partner of Hunter’s, said in court that Burisma energy executives asked them to utilize their connections in Washington to lessen the “pressure” a corruption probe by prosecutor Viktor Shokin was putting on the company. The conversation happens right before Archer’s testimony, which is a significant point.
The main disagreement between Comer and the National Archives revolves around whether or whether the communications involving Biden, Hunter, and their colleagues qualify as duties of the Vice Presidency or fall within the Presidential Records Act’s “personal records” exception. Representative Comer claims that his committee should have the ability to collect these information as it is looking into Biden for potential power abuse.
According to the committee, giving access can stop future abuses by residents of the White House.
“The Committee’s need for these Vice Presidential records is specific and well documented. The Committee seeks to craft legislative solutions aimed at deficiencies it has identified in the current legal framework regarding ethics laws and disclosure of financial interests related to the immediate family members of Vice Presidents and Presidents — deficiencies that may place American national security and interests at risk,” the committee wrote.
“The Committee is concerned that foreign nationals have sought access and influence by engaging in lucrative business relationships with high-profile political figures’ immediate family members, including members of the Biden family,” it added.

Up to nine members of the Biden family were found to be involved in questionable financial dealings, according to Rep. Comer, who heads Congress’ probe into the family. Through front firms related to suspects or communist governments, millions of dollars were transferred. President Biden maintains his innocence despite the devastating testimony of Hunter’s former business partner and even admits to attending many meetings with Burisma officials.
