In a decisive move, the Republican-led House of Representatives passed a bill mandating the deportation of illegal immigrants found guilty of assaulting police officers. The measure garnered notable bipartisan support, passing with a 265 to 148 vote, including affirmative votes from 54 Democrats. This legislative action forms part of the GOP’s agenda during National Police Week, aiming to bolster law enforcement protections.
The bill, formally titled the “Detain and Deport Illegal Aliens Who Assault Cops Act,” spearheaded by Representative Jeff Van Drew (R-N.J.), emphasizes the necessity of upholding law and order. “There is no reason that an illegal alien who attacks our law enforcement should remain in our country; that shows zero respect for our rule of law or our institutions, and they will not be positive contributors to society,” stated Rep. Van Drew when introducing the bill in February.

Under this new legislation, federal authorities are required to detain illegal immigrants accused of assaulting police until their deportation proceedings are complete.
