A Massachusetts judge who became a national flashpoint over illegal immigration just received a brutal dose of accountability. After years of controversy, the state’s judicial watchdog concluded that Boston Judge Shelley Richmond Joseph unintentionally helped an illegal migrant evade ICE custody — and now faces public reprimand for her actions that “created the appearance of impropriety and bias.”
The Escape Heard Around Boston
It all began when Judge Joseph allowed an illegal immigrant, Jose Medina-Perez, to leave her courtroom and head to the courthouse lock-up area. What followed would set off a media firestorm and federal investigation.
While Medina-Perez’s lawyer and a court officer worked to help him slip out a back door to avoid arrest by ICE, Judge Joseph claimed she had no idea what was happening behind the scenes. She believed the defendant was simply going to consult privately with his attorney.
But to many Americans watching, the optics were damning — a judge appearing to help someone defy federal immigration law inside a courthouse.
