In a fiery congressional hearing, former Secret Service agent turned conservative commentator, Dan Bongino, criticized his former agency for what he described as alarming failures in technology and leadership. According to Bongino, these shortcomings have left the lives of presidents and presidential candidates increasingly vulnerable to threats. His blunt assessment came during a hearing investigating the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, highlighting what he sees as a dire need for reform within the Secret Service.
The hearing was convened by a bipartisan committee of U.S. House members to explore the circumstances surrounding the July 13th incident in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a 20-year-old gunman managed to position himself on a rooftop just hundreds of yards away from where Trump was speaking. Despite the gravity of the situation, Bongino pointed out that the Secret Service’s reluctance to embrace modern security techniques contributed to this near-catastrophic failure. “The joke in the Secret Service, which is sadly no longer funny when I was there, and it wasn’t funny then either, is they rely on yesterday’s technology tomorrow,” Bongino testified during his five-minute statement.

Bongino didn’t hold back in criticizing the outdated practices still in use by the agency. “Everything from computer systems that waste agents’ times filling out time and attendance records they were doing,” he said, pointing out the inefficiency of the agency’s current processes. He also highlighted the delayed implementation of basic technologies, such as slings, which he noted were only introduced five or six years into his tenure. “The weaponry was old. Everything was old. These are things I would’ve talked about sooner if they didn’t create a security crisis,” he added, emphasizing the urgent need for technological updates.
