Not a Conservative, Just Speaking the Truth
This isn’t a conservative radio host or a Republican pundit.
This is a lifelong Hollywood liberal who has spent years lecturing Americans about paying their “fair share” — finally facing the hard truth that Democrats have been selling an illusion.
California’s results are clear:
California’s Spending is a Failure in Action
The Golden State collects a staggering $322 billion each year, carrying some of the highest tax rates in the nation.
Despite spending $24 billion on homelessness over five years, the crisis has only worsened. Today, 187,000 Californians are living on the streets. Oakland, for example, saw its homeless population jump 9% during that period.
Richard Stern of the Heritage Foundation explained it plainly: the problem isn’t a lack of effort or funding. “California isn’t failing to solve homelessness despite its spending. Its policies are producing exactly the result you’d expect when government agencies answer to no one,” Stern said.
Maher Was Right About Defense Too
Maher didn’t stop at fiscal issues. He also hit a conservative note on national security.
With U.S. forces now five weeks into Operation Epic Fury — the joint U.S.-Israel campaign that has targeted over 9,000 locations in Iran and neutralized more than 70% of the regime’s missile systems — Democrats have tried to argue that military spending hurts Americans at home.
Maher disagreed. He said military action doesn’t take money away from ordinary citizens.
“The first job of government is defense,” he said, noting that if Iran was just weeks from acquiring a nuclear weapon, the spending is justified.
President Trump’s warning on Iran’s nuclear timeline has been confirmed. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth outlined the mission: destroy Iran’s missiles and drones, dismantle its navy, and make sure the regime never develops nuclear weapons. Israeli intelligence reports indicate Iranian missile production has already dropped to zero.
This is what strong national defense looks like — and Maher, who long opposed Trump, essentially endorsed it.
Democrats Can’t Answer the Real Question
Democrats promised higher taxes would fix homelessness and strengthen social programs.
Maher, paying over half his income year after year, looked around Los Angeles and found no progress.
Consider this: Los Angeles spent $250 million on a single homelessness initiative in one budget year, yet the city’s mayor couldn’t name a single person who had moved into permanent housing.
This isn’t a disagreement about policy. It’s proof that Republicans have been right since Ronald Reagan: big government spending often produces little to show for it, and Democrats who collect the money can’t explain the results.
