When questioned by Bill Maher on his Real Time program on Friday, Senator Bernie Sanders (D-VT) was unable to distinguish between the terms equity and equality. Even seasoned politicians might get stuck on issues from time to time, but this particular query has many people wondering what could have prompted such hesitancy for a respected senator in one of America’s most renowned venues.

“It’s not the same word and the same concept so how would you differentiate between equity and equality?” Maher questioned Senator Sanders.
“Well, equality we talk about, uh, I don’t know what the answer to that is, come me to think of it, you know, uh, equality is equality of opportunity, alright, we live in a society we want all people to have, whatever color your skin is,” Sanders replied, unable to think of a suitable retort.
“Equity I think is more guarantee of outcome, is it not,” Maher intervened with skill and elegance to make sure the senior presenter could respond intelligently.
“Yeah, I think so,” Sanders listened to the plan and nodded his agreement with a tinge of astonishment.
“So which side do you come down on?” Maher added.
The senator replied, “Uh, equality,” seeming perplexed.

Although though Bernie Sanders has said that he is committed to equality, a deeper look at his website indicates that the campaign is really more about equity. This variation in replies suggests that there are many levels of intricacy to this election season. “Is committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in hiring, in programming, and in all other aspects of the work we do.”
“Diversity, equity, and inclusion are deeply connected to our mission, our success, and to serving the American people,” the website reads.
When Margaret Brennan of CBS News confronted Sen. Sanders about the uproar surrounding the exorbitant ticket pricing from his book tour in February, she forced him to defend his capitalist choices. His remark generated a flurry of discussion on how to balance successful business with progressive principles.
“She pointed out that tickets for his new book tour event are selling for nearly $100 on Ticketmaster, a site known for its ‘anti-competitive behavior.’ She then asked if he is really benefitting from the capitalist system that he claims to be trying to dismantle,” Earlier, Trending Politics reported.
