A Democratic staffer for Representative Joe Morelle (D-NY) faced arrest on Capitol Hill on Friday after Capitol Police discovered ammunition in his bag during a routine security screening at the Cannon House Office Building.
Michael Hopkins, 38, was detained and charged with unlawful possession of ammunition. Capitol Police reported that Hopkins placed his bag on the X-ray scanner at a security checkpoint, where officers identified suspicious objects. Upon further inspection, they uncovered four ammunition magazines and eleven rounds of ammunition inside the bag, as reported by WROC.

Hopkins reportedly claimed he had forgotten about the ammunition, according to investigators. The incident immediately heightened security protocols, though no firearms were found in Hopkins’ possession or connected to the situation. He now faces charges of illegal possession of ammunition, including one count for carrying a high-capacity magazine.
