A small family owned restaurant in southern Arizona has suddenly found itself at the center of a national political firestorm after its owner made a public show of support for federal law enforcement.
Sammy’s Mexican Grill, located in the quiet town of Catalina, went viral this week after owner Jorge Rivas announced that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and other federal officers would receive free meals at his restaurant.
Rivas, a legal immigrant from El Salvador, said the gesture was meant as a sign of respect and gratitude toward those tasked with enforcing America’s immigration laws.
“Everyone who works for ICE, all federal agents can come to Sammy’s Mexican Grill,” Rivas stated during an interview that was later translated into English and shared widely on social media. “Here they will be treated with respect and as they deserve.”
The short clip spread rapidly online, drawing millions of views and triggering a wave of intense reactions across the political spectrum.
