A growing controversy is putting Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez under intense scrutiny after reports surfaced that she attended a New York Yankees game from a private suite while thousands of Department of Homeland Security workers continue to go without pay.
The contrast is striking. While some Coast Guard families are reportedly relying on food pantries to get by, the New York congresswoman was seen enjoying a high-profile outing at Yankee Stadium, posing for photos and interacting with fans.
At the center of the backlash is a resurfaced statement from Ocasio-Cortez dating back to the 2018 government shutdown. At the time, she publicly argued that lawmakers should share in the financial consequences of political gridlock.
“Next time we have a gov shutdown, Congressional salaries should be furloughed as well,” she posted. “It’s completely unacceptable that members of Congress can force a government shutdown on partisan lines & then have Congressional salaries exempt from that decision. Have some integrity.”
That statement is now being widely circulated again as critics highlight what they see as a disconnect between past rhetoric and current behavior.
