A Copper Deal That Tells a Much Bigger Story
Amazon Web Services quietly signed a copper supply agreement with Rio Tinto tied to the Johnson Camp mine near Tucson, Arizona. The mine reopened last year after sitting dormant for more than a decade.
The deal covers about 14,000 metric tons of copper over four years. Amazon framed it as a sustainability win. In reality, it exposed a looming crisis.
A single large AI data center can require anywhere from 5,000 to 15,000 tons of copper. The largest facilities can swallow up to 50,000 tons once wiring, transformers, circuit boards, and power systems are accounted for.
