An Alabama judge just made a decision that’s leaving victims’ families, police, and lawmakers furious — and exposing a gaping hole in the state’s justice system.

A 19-year-old man accused in a deadly mass shooting was released on bond, despite being caught with a loaded weapon and facing attempted murder charges. Now, critics say this case is proof that Alabama’s weak bail laws are putting innocent lives at risk.
Accused Gunman Walks Free Days After Arrest
In Montgomery, 19-year-old Javorick Whiting was charged with attempted murder after a mass shooting that killed two people and injured 12 others outside a hookah lounge on October 4. Police say the chaos erupted following the Morehouse–Tuskegee Classic football game when multiple shooters opened fire on a crowd — even though only one person was the intended target.
The victims included 17-year-old Jeremiah Morris and 43-year-old Shalanda Williams, both killed in the crossfire.
Police arrested Whiting with a loaded firearm, an extended magazine, and a Glock switch — a device that converts pistols into fully automatic weapons. Despite that, a Montgomery judge set his bond at just $60,000, allowing him to walk free after posting roughly $6,000 through a bail bondsman — just one day after his arrest.
