In a move that marks the end of one of the most polarizing eras in Congress, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced Thursday that she will not seek re-election. After nearly forty years representing San Francisco, the 85-year-old Democrat is stepping away from the political stage she dominated for decades.
“I will not be seeking re-election to Congress,” Pelosi declared in a video address to her constituents. Her statement, while calm and composed, sent shockwaves through the Democratic establishment and relief through much of conservative America.
Pelosi confirmed she will finish out her final term before officially retiring. “My message to the city I love is this: San Francisco, know your power,” she said. “We have made history. We have made progress. We have always led the way.”
The former Speaker—known for her fierce partisanship and iron grip on her caucus—said she hopes her city continues to lead, adding, “And now we must continue to do so by remaining full participants in our democracy and fighting for the American ideals we hold dear.”
