Final Genesis Tour and Emotional Farewell

In 2022, Collins reunited with Genesis for one last tour. Unable to play the drums, he took center stage sitting in a chair, while his son, Nic, took over on percussion. During their final show in London, Collins told the audience, “Tonight is a very special night. Of course, we’re playing in London. It’s the last stop of our tour, and it’s the last show for Genesis.”

He then joked, “It’s difficult for us to believe that you still came out to see it. I guess after tonight we’ve all got to get real jobs.”

Struggles With Nerve Damage and Mobility Issues

Collins’ health problems stem from years of relentless drumming, which took a devastating toll on his body. In 2007, a spinal injury led to severe nerve damage. “My vertebrae have been crushing my spinal cord because of the position I drum in,” he explained in a 2019 interview. “It comes from years of playing. I can’t even hold the sticks properly without it being painful, I even used to tape the sticks to my hands to get through.”

On top of that, he developed foot drop after a back surgery, a condition that severely affects mobility. “As a result of a back operation which makes it difficult to walk,” he wrote in a 2017 Facebook post. The Mayo Clinic defines foot drop as a condition where “the front of your foot might drag on the ground when you walk.”

His signature drum sound and emotional songwriting have left an indelible mark on rock and pop history.
