Appearing on CNN, Phillips advised Democrats to stop their relentless attacks and instead consider working with Musk to address government waste.
“Unfortunately, Democrats are only focused on one thing right now: Mr. Musk,” Phillips said. “The fact of the matter, he’s quite popular. He has the largest platform in human history which is, of course, Twitter/X.”
Rather than continuing their futile opposition, Phillips suggested that Democrats should work alongside Musk before they get completely steamrolled.
“I think we’re missing the boat as Democrats,” Phillips stated. “All I’m saying is that sometimes, it’s better to join them and actually play a role in how the strategy works rather than so pathetically, frankly, try to combat something that clearly is a steamroller. And Democrats are being steamrolled.”
Instead of focusing on real issues, Democrats are making Musk their punching bag—and it’s backfiring. Representative Robert Garcia (D-CA) even went on CNN and resorted to name-calling, referring to Musk as a “d***” for his work with DOGE.
Phillips called out this childish behavior, warning that it isn’t resonating with the American people.
“I got to tell you, I was really embarrassed for my Democratic colleagues, Mr. Garcia and others, because the fact of the matter is this is not playing well around the country,” Phillips explained. “People want the government to work better. They believe that Mr. Musk, one of the most extraordinary entrepreneurs in human history, who does not fail at just about anything, they want him to do this, most Americans. They wanted Trump. They elected him.”
Cutting government waste is overwhelmingly popular with voters—something that should be a bipartisan priority. But Democrats, consumed by their hatred of Musk and former President Donald Trump, are fighting progress every step of the way.
Phillips sees an opportunity for his party to regain some credibility—by actually working with Republicans on reducing waste and fraud instead of engaging in political theater.
“And I just would hope that my Democratic colleagues might change the strategy and perhaps actually work with Republicans to identify waste and fraud and actually attack that because then they would have some more credibility as it relates to the constitutional issues,” Phillips said.
He also admitted that he’s troubled by the current leadership of his party.

“Look, if I could wave my magic wand, I would also identify ways to reduce waste in the federal government,” Phillips said. “When I ran for President, Laura, that was one of my propositions, to engage one of the world’s foremost consulting firms to literally look at the entire federal budget and make thoughtful recommendations to Congress about how we could actually become more efficient, more effective, and that was a proposition of mine.”
It’s no secret that Democrats see Musk as a proxy for Trump. They believe that by going after Musk, they can damage Trump politically. But they might want to rethink their strategy.
A recent Axios focus group of swing voters in Arizona revealed that an overwhelming 80% support Musk’s efforts to cut government waste. This means Democrats are not just on the wrong side of Musk—they’re on the wrong side of the American people.
While the Left obsesses over demonizing Musk, the rest of the country is looking for solutions. Instead of attacking one of the most successful entrepreneurs in history, Democrats would do well to listen to their own former colleague—before they find themselves steamrolled once again.
