The Internal Democratic Civil War Intensifies
Pelosi was forced to make a major concession back in 2018, agreeing to serve only two terms as Speaker of the House in exchange for securing votes from Ocasio-Cortez and her progressive allies. But even after stepping down as Speaker, Pelosi continues to wield enormous influence within the party, and that hasn’t sat well with AOC’s faction.
The Democratic Party has been in chaos since the disastrous 2024 election cycle, and Pelosi’s role in that debacle has come under scrutiny. The party suffered devastating losses, yet its leadership has remained largely intact. Many on the left see this as a failure of accountability.
Pelosi, in particular, is blamed for playing a key role in forcing Joe Biden out of the presidential race, which led to Kamala Harris’ disastrous candidacy. Worse yet, she was one of the party leaders who allegedly participated in covering up Biden’s declining mental state for years, preventing the party from fielding a strong alternative.
Chakrabarti Calls for a New Generation of Leadership
Chakrabarti is making it clear that his campaign is about more than just unseating Pelosi—it’s about a generational shift in leadership. He argues that Pelosi is out of touch and no longer fit to fight for the issues that matter today.
“I respect what Nancy Pelosi has accomplished in her career, but we are living in a totally different America than the one she knew when she entered politics 45 years ago,” Chakrabarti stated. He also took a direct shot at her outdated leadership style, saying, “In an interview with Ezra Klein after Trump’s victory, Pelosi said the Democrats don’t need to change. I disagree.”
One of his biggest grievances is how Pelosi has actively worked to block progressives from gaining power within the party. He pointed to an instance where Pelosi personally intervened to prevent AOC from becoming the top Democrat on the powerful House Oversight Committee.
“When Democrats were about to appoint their star communicator — Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — to chair the powerful Oversight committee to hold Trump and his cronies accountable, Pelosi personally intervened to block it,” Chakrabarti said.
Is Pelosi Becoming the Democrats’ Version of Biden?
Chakrabarti’s campaign is drawing an uncomfortable parallel between Pelosi and Joe Biden, both of whom he sees as relics of the past. His message is that Pelosi has been in power for far too long, and her leadership has failed to deliver for everyday Americans.
“When Nancy Pelosi was first elected to Congress, you could buy a home on a single income. A summer job could pay for college. Republicans believed in climate change and respected election results,” Chakrabarti noted. “Now, the things that defined the American Dream — being able to afford health care, education, a home, and raise a family — are impossible for most people. And the Republican Party is overtly conspiratorial and anti-democracy.”
The challenge Pelosi now faces is significant. While she remains a hero to the Democratic establishment, her progressive critics argue that she’s holding the party back from making the changes necessary to compete in the modern political landscape.

Can Pelosi Hold On?
Despite the high-profile primary challenge, Pelosi is still the overwhelming favorite to win re-election. Her name recognition, fundraising ability, and deep connections within the Democratic establishment make her an incredibly formidable opponent.
However, the mere fact that she’s facing such a serious challenge from within her own party signals that the Democratic Party is still in turmoil. The fallout from the 2024 election continues to haunt them, and the battle over the party’s future is far from over.
If nothing else, Chakrabarti’s candidacy is a warning sign: the progressive wing of the party isn’t backing down, and they’re willing to go to war to take down the old guard. Whether Pelosi survives this challenge or not, the cracks in the Democratic Party are becoming impossible to ignore.
