In a bold move that has reignited tensions between the U.S. and Mexico, President Claudia Sheinbaum is calling on Google to take a stand against former President Donald Trump’s latest executive order—an order that officially renames the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.”
Google, responding to the controversial name change, has stated that it will adjust Google Maps accordingly. However, the tech giant clarified that the new name will only appear where applicable.

“We have a longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources,” Google said in a statement, according to the BBC. “When official names vary between countries, Maps users see their official local name.” This means that Mexican users will continue seeing “Gulf of Mexico,” while in the U.S., the water body will be labeled “Gulf of America.”
