Turns out that story was closer to disinformation because the Hunter Biden laptop appeared to be true,” Caputo said.
The timing couldn’t have been worse for Trump. Just weeks before the election, mainstream platforms like Twitter and Facebook also restricted access to reports about the laptop, labeling it as misinformation.
“Don’t Write About the Laptop”
Caputo, who was covering Biden for POLITICO at the time, revealed how his editors blocked any attempt to explore the laptop story further. Despite his insistence that the story deserved coverage, Caputo said the decision to ignore it came from the top.
“I was covering Biden at the time, and I remember coming to my editor and saying, ‘Hey, we need to write about the Hunter Biden laptop.’ And I was told this came from on high at Politico: Don’t write about the laptop, don’t talk about the laptop, don’t tweet about the laptop,” Caputo revealed.
Instead, the only story POLITICO ran was the now-debunked claim that the laptop was Russian disinformation.
Editors Delayed Negative Stories About Biden
Tara Palmeri, another former POLITICO reporter, shared her frustration with how the outlet treated stories that painted Biden in a negative light. She pointed to her investigation into Hunter Biden’s gun-related charges, which took months to publish despite being thoroughly sourced.
“Cause it was hard to get it done. I spent three months on it, I went to the laptop shop, and I did all of the reporting in Delaware… But yeah, it had to be 100% nailed down,” Palmeri explained. She admitted that she suspected editors were slow-walking the story because Biden was still enjoying a “honeymoon period” early in his administration.
Palmeri said she consulted Caputo for advice, given the challenges she faced pitching stories critical of Biden. Caputo recalled the moment, saying, “I remember you consulted with me cause you did the original report on the gun and you came to me like, ‘How do I write about this?’ I’m like, ‘Honestly, I don’t know.’”
Confirmation of Media Bias
For conservatives, the confessions from Palmeri and Caputo confirm a long-held belief: the mainstream media has been anything but neutral. Stories damaging to Trump were rushed into print, while Biden received kid-glove treatment.

Both Palmeri and Caputo are well-respected journalists, making their accounts even more significant. Caputo, in particular, is known for being one of the few reporters in mainstream media with credible sources in Trump’s orbit.
