McConnell Stabbed Trump in the Back on Day One!

>> Continued From the Previous Page <<

Central to this mission was Trump’s intent to pardon January 6 defendants, individuals he referred to as “hostages.” In announcing the pardons, Trump characterized the move as essential for national healing.

“This proclamation ends a grave national injustice that has been perpetrated upon the American people over the last four years and begins a process of national reconciliation,” Trump stated in his executive order, which granted pardons and commutations to more than 1,500 individuals.

The former president’s actions stood in stark contrast to what many conservatives viewed as a two-tier justice system. While the Biden administration pursued harsh sentences for January 6 participants, leniency was often extended to Black Lives Matter activists, even in cases involving violence.

McConnell and Other RINOs Attack Trump

Rather than support Trump’s efforts, establishment Republicans like Mitch McConnell seized the opportunity to criticize him. McConnell made his position clear, stating, “No one should excuse violence. And particularly violence against police officers.”

Other Republicans, such as Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina, echoed McConnell’s sentiment. “I’ve got concerns with any pardons for people who did any harm to police officers. Full stop. And I’ve also got serious concerns with all of the pardons by Biden,” Tillis told reporters.

This criticism from within the GOP highlighted a growing divide between establishment Republicans and the grassroots base that overwhelmingly supported Trump.

Rigged Trials and Biased Judges

Trump’s pardons were also a response to what many conservatives viewed as unfair trials for January 6 defendants. These individuals were often subjected to what critics called “show trials,” with juries and judges that appeared to be biased against them. As a result, many defendants pled guilty, fearing the impossibility of receiving a fair trial.

The pardons drew fiery responses from left-wing judges. U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell dismissed Trump’s claims of injustice, stating, “No ‘national injustice’ occurred here, just as no outcome-determinative election fraud occurred in the 2020 presidential election. No ‘process of national reconciliation’ can begin when poor losers, whose preferred candidate loses an election, are glorified for disrupting a constitutionally mandated proceeding in Congress and doing so with impunity.”

Judge Tanya Chutkan, who had presided over numerous January 6 cases, also lashed out. “It cannot repair the jagged breach in America’s sacred tradition of peacefully transitioning power,” Chutkan raged. “In hundreds of cases like this one over the past four years, judges in this district have administered justice without fear or favor. The historical record established by those proceedings must stand, unmoved by political winds, as a testament and as a warning.”

A Divided Party

The backlash from McConnell and other establishment Republicans served to underscore the internal conflicts within the GOP. While Trump’s supporters applauded his bold stance on justice reform and his willingness to take on the political establishment, others in the party viewed his actions as controversial and divisive.

Trump’s first day in office should have been a unifying moment for Republicans to rally behind their leader. Instead, it became a flashpoint that highlighted the ongoing battle between Trump’s America First agenda and the entrenched interests of establishment politicians. As Trump’s presidency unfolded, it became increasingly clear that his biggest fights wouldn’t just come from the left—they’d come from within his own party.
