“Former Vice President Mike Pence’s conservative advocacy group, Advancing American Freedom (AAF), is urging senators to reject Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s nomination for Health and Human Services (HHS) secretary, citing his inconsistent abortion record,” reported Newsmax. The organization highlighted Kennedy’s past support for abortion access, including late-term procedures, as a key reason for their opposition.
Pence himself previously labeled Kennedy Jr. “the most pro-abortion Republican-appointed secretary of HHS in modern history.” In the letter, AAF expressed concerns about Kennedy’s commitments, stating, “While RFK Jr. has made certain overtures to pro-life leaders that he would be mindful of their concerns at HHS, there is little reason for confidence at this time.”
Adding to the drama, Kennedy Jr. now faces backlash from an unexpected corner: an organization that once supported his bid for the White House. Protect Our Care, a progressive group that backed Kennedy during his 2024 presidential campaign, has launched a campaign to block his HHS nomination. Dubbed the “Stop RFK War Room,” the effort includes a $1 million ad campaign aimed at derailing his confirmation.
“A progressive group that bolstered Robert F. Kennedy Jr. during the 2024 presidential campaign is also supporting a new war room that wants to scuttle his nomination for Health and Human Services Secretary,” reported Axios. According to sources, Protect Our Care is using the funds for digital ads and to coordinate opposition ahead of Kennedy’s yet-to-be-scheduled hearing.
Kennedy Jr. is reportedly furious over the betrayal. Despite the uphill battle, he continues to court senators on both sides of the aisle.

Meanwhile, confirmation hearings for other Trump Cabinet nominees have been making headlines this week. Secretary of Defense nominee Pete Hegseth faced a heated four-hour hearing on Tuesday but currently enjoys unanimous Republican support. Other key nominees, including Kristi Noem for Homeland Security, Pam Bondi for Attorney General, and Marco Rubio for Secretary of State, have also begun their confirmation processes.
Kennedy Jr.’s eventual hearing promises to be one of the most contentious yet. Sparks have already flown in preliminary meetings, and with opposition coming from both progressives and conservatives, his path to the HHS Secretary position is anything but guaranteed. One thing is certain—if and when his hearing is scheduled, it will be a political spectacle unlike any other.
