HBO host and liberal comedian Bill Maher unleashed sharp criticism of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass during the season opener of his show, comparing her to the infamous Roman Emperor Nero. Maher accused Bass of neglecting her duties while wildfires devastated neighborhoods across Los Angeles, including the upscale Pacific Palisades.
In his opening monologue, Maher did not hold back, also targeting California Governor Gavin Newsom and those defending their actions amidst the chaos. Highlighting systemic failures, Maher remarked, “I’m sure it’s very complicated. That’s why I pay 13% of my income in this state every year to people who I assumed were working on things like this.”

Hydrant Failures and Budget Cuts
Maher pointed out glaring issues during the wildfire crisis, particularly the failure of hydrants in the Pacific Palisades to provide water when needed. He noted, “When asked why so many of the hydrants in the Palisades ran out of water, Governor Newsom said the local folks are trying to figure that out. Yeah, you got to do that before the fire.”
