As U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (I-WV) prepares to leave office, he’s making waves by sharply criticizing the Democratic Party, accusing it of being hijacked by progressive elitists disconnected from ordinary Americans. In a recent interview with CNN, Manchin, who left the Democratic Party earlier this year, lamented the state of modern politics and expressed relief at leaving what he called “the worst performing Congress in the history of the United States of America.”
“I am not a Democrat in the form of… what the Democratic Party has turned itself into, the national brand, absolutely not,” Manchin told CNN’s Manu Raju in a candid and wide-ranging discussion. “Here’s what I told them: I said ‘you oughta figure out how you lost somebody like me.’”

A Lifelong Democrat Turned Independent
Manchin, who hails from West Virginia and grew up in modest circumstances, has long embodied the traditional values of the Democratic Party of Franklin D. Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy. His grandfather’s admiration for these leaders shaped Manchin’s views on government’s role in uplifting communities and providing a social safety net. Yet over the years, Manchin observed a rift forming within the party, driving him further away from its contemporary identity.
