Trump further questioned why the U.S. was bearing such a financial burden: “Why are we supporting and giving other countries hundreds of billions of dollars? It’s not fair. It’s not right.”
In response to the tariff threat, Trudeau rushed to Mar-a-Lago for emergency talks. However, his actions only deepened fractures within his party. Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, reportedly frustrated by what she saw as political posturing, resigned from her position.
Party in Freefall
Polls now show the Liberal Party trailing the Conservative Party by 20 points. Critics accuse Trudeau of scapegoating Freeland to deflect blame for his government’s failings ahead of a potential landslide loss.
Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre, seen as the likely next Prime Minister, did not hold back in his criticism of Trudeau.
“Just blame Chrystia Freeland and make her wear it all. Some feminist,” Poilievre remarked.
He added, “The same week as Trudeau was insulting Americans for not electing a woman president, he was busy throwing his own woman deputy prime minister under the bus to replace her with a man. You can’t make this stuff up.”

Hypocrisy Exposed
Trudeau has often painted himself as a champion of women’s rights, once declaring, “Everywhere, women’s rights and women’s progress is under attack — overtly and subtly, but I want you to know that I am and always will be a proud feminist. You will always have an ally in me and my government.”
Yet, female members of his own party tell a different story. Liberal MP Celina Caesar-Chavannes, who left the party to sit as an independent, criticized Trudeau for sidelining women who challenge his authority.
“This is a moment of leadership for Canadians where we need to say enough is enough of a leader who decides that whenever he is challenged on something that someone else has an authority to speak on, like economics, that he’s just going to throw them away,” Caesar-Chavannes said.
A Tarnished Legacy
The scandal surrounding Trudeau’s treatment of women has further eroded his standing. While he continues to label himself a feminist, actions like Freeland’s resignation paint a starkly different picture.
As Canada moves closer to its next federal election, Trudeau’s party appears on track for a historic defeat. For a leader who once touted progressivism and inclusivity, the end of his tenure could mark a humiliating fall from grace.
The self-proclaimed “proud feminist” may soon face the ultimate political reckoning as Canadians decide whether his leadership reflects the values he claims to champion.
