Trump vs. Panama: Canal Fight ERUPTS!

>> Continued From the Previous Page <<

A Critical National Asset

Trump emphasized the strategic and economic importance of the Panama Canal to the United States in a follow-up post.

“The Panama Canal is considered a VITAL National Asset for the United States, due to its critical role to America’s Economy and National Security,” he explained. Highlighting its significance, Trump noted the canal’s role in facilitating rapid naval deployment between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and drastically reducing shipping times for U.S. commerce.

Over 70 percent of all Panama Canal transits involve U.S. ports, making it a lifeline for the American economy. Trump also reminded followers of the immense cost of building the canal, both in lives and treasure. He pointed to the 38,000 American workers who lost their lives during its construction under President Theodore Roosevelt’s leadership, a feat Trump called “one of the Wonders of the Modern World.”

Trump didn’t mince words in criticizing former President Jimmy Carter for transferring control of the canal to Panama in the 1977 Panama Canal Treaty. “It was foolishly given away… solely for Panama to manage, not China, or anyone else,” Trump wrote, taking issue with what he called Panama’s “ridiculous” toll rates on U.S. ships and corporations.

Panama’s Defiant Response

President Mulino wasted no time in responding. In a video statement, he firmly rejected Trump’s assertions.

“As President, I want to express clearly that every square meter of the Panama Canal and its adjacent zone belongs to Panama, and will continue to do so,” Mulino said. He dismissed concerns about outside influence, stating, “The Canal is not under direct or indirect control, neither by China, nor by the European Community, nor by the United States, nor by any other power.”

Mulino doubled down on Panama’s independence, asserting that his country respects other nations but demands mutual respect in return.

A Heated Exchange Continues

Trump’s response was swift and cryptic: “We’ll see about that!”

The former president’s remarks have reignited longstanding tensions surrounding the Panama Canal’s control and its strategic role in global trade. Trump’s focus on China’s influence and Panama’s pricing structure underscores his broader concern about American sovereignty and economic interests.

As the debate unfolds, questions linger about what actions, if any, the United States might take regarding the canal. For now, the exchange between Trump and Mulino sets the stage for a heated international discussion on power, sovereignty, and economics.
