In a fiery exchange, former President Donald Trump has reignited debate over the Panama Canal, taking aim at Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino’s firm declaration of sovereignty. Trump’s comments, made on Truth Social over the weekend, came in response to Mulino’s assertion that “every square meter” of the canal belongs to Panama.
Trump’s warning wasn’t subtle. On Saturday, he suggested that the United States might seize control of the Panama Canal unless Panama adjusts its pricing structure and addresses concerns over growing Chinese influence in the region.

“The United States has a vested interest in the secure, efficient, and reliable operation of the Panama Canal, and that was always understood. We would and will NEVER let it fall into the wrong hands!” Trump declared. “If the principles, both moral and legal, of this magnanimous gesture of giving are not followed, then we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to us, in full, and without question.”
