House Democrats are pointing fingers at billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk for his role in derailing a massive end-of-year bipartisan spending bill, setting the stage for a potential government shutdown.
The bill, negotiated by Congressional leaders including GOP House Speaker Mike Johnson, sought to fund the federal government through March 14 via a continuing resolution. However, the proposed legislation, spanning roughly 1,500 pages, contained several controversial add-ons. Among these were $100 billion in disaster relief, $30 billion for farmers, funding for the reconstruction of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, a new NFL stadium in Washington, D.C., pay raises for lawmakers, and expanded federal worker healthcare benefits.

With the government facing a potential shutdown at midnight on Friday, conservative Republicans voiced strong opposition to the bill. This resistance grew louder when Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency co-chair Vivek Ramaswamy joined in, followed by President-elect Donald Trump.
