A hearing to determine whether Harris will be tried as an adult is set for January.

Savannah’s father, Michael Copeland, recounted the devastating night he discovered his daughter’s body. When she failed to return home, he used his phone to track her location. Tragically, the search ended in heartbreak when he found Savannah’s body on the trail.

“I think it was a lack of compassion and a lack of empathy that drove the hand that took my daughter’s life,” Michael Copeland told reporters.

Savannah, a middle school cheerleader remembered for her lively spirit, had a bright future that was stolen in an instant. Her family is now left grappling with unimaginable pain.

The Knoxville community has rallied around the grieving family, offering their support in this dark time. Michael Copeland said the outpouring of love and kindness has helped restore his faith in humanity and in God.

“It helps to kind of restore my faith in God and everyone around us,” he said.

To honor his daughter’s memory, Copeland placed a cross at the spot where she lost her life. He hopes it will serve as a reminder for people to treat each other with kindness and compassion.

“Savannah, only 13 years old, was the victim of a vicious murder in the early hours of October 22, 2024,” reads a heartfelt message on a GoFundMe page set up for the family. “Savannah was a joy to her parents, brother Britton and twin brother Kasey, family, and friends. She lost her young life in a senseless manner leaving behind her devastated family.”

Copeland’s words reflect a remarkable strength as he refuses to let hatred consume him. “I’m not going to allow my heart to be filled with that kind of rage; it’s going to be filled with compassion. That’s the only way I know how to defeat evil,” he said.

The decision to try Harris as an adult underscores the weight of the crime. While juvenile courts focus on rehabilitation, cases like these often prompt prosecutors to seek harsher penalties. The upcoming hearing will determine whether Harris will face adult sentencing, which could include a lengthy prison term if convicted.

Savannah’s father described her as “spunky” and “eager,” a young girl with a go-getter attitude who brought joy to everyone she met. Her death has left a gaping hole in her family’s life, but they are determined to honor her legacy by fostering kindness in the community.

This tragic case has not only shaken Powell, Tennessee, but it has also served as a somber reminder of the need for compassion and empathy in today’s society.
