Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin took a stand in August, ordering noncitizens to be removed from the state’s voter rolls in a measure aimed at preserving election integrity. This wasn’t a new move for Virginia; similar clean-ups have occurred in the past, ensuring that only eligible voters appear on its lists. Yet this time, Youngkin’s push was met with fierce resistance from the Biden-Harris administration. The Department of Justice filed a lawsuit, arguing that the purge violated federal law due to its timing, which was within 90 days of the federal election. This suit brought the case to District Court Judge Patricia Tolliver Giles, a Biden appointee, who ruled against Youngkin’s efforts.

The 90-day restriction was meant to prevent sudden, sweeping changes to voter rolls that might disrupt elections.
