Among Walz’s most ambitious proposals is the expansion—or “packing”—of the U.S. Supreme Court. Wade, which eliminated federal protections for abortion. Progressives, still reeling from that loss, are keen to prevent future conservative rulings.
Walz’s plan would allow the next president, likely Harris, to select additional justices, fundamentally changing the balance of the Court. This idea of court-packing, which has long been controversial, is being touted as a way to restore a liberal majority. President Biden has floated similar ideas, including instituting an ethics code for justices, setting a mandatory retirement age, and establishing a rotating series of nominations to ensure each president leaves a mark on the Court.
Walz is also pushing for the admission of Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico as the 51st and 52nd states. Both areas are heavily Democratic and currently lack voting representation in Congress, which frustrates their residents. By granting statehood, Walz hopes to secure additional seats for Democrats in both the House and Senate, further solidifying the party’s control in Washington.
Critics, including conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, have raised concerns about Walz’s agenda. Kirk has accused Walz of seeking to “shred” the Constitution by eroding free speech protections and enacting a “mandatory” gun confiscation program, though Kirk provided no concrete examples. Kirk also warned that Walz’s policies would undermine the benefits of U.S. citizenship, alluding to a recent rise in noncitizen voting claims in Arizona’s elections.
Another top priority for Walz is the abolition of the U.S. Senate’s filibuster. The filibuster, a procedural tactic that allows a minority of senators to block legislation unless 60 votes are secured, has long been a thorn in the side of Democrats hoping to pass sweeping reforms. Walz sees its removal as essential to advancing a progressive agenda, including codifying abortion protections into law.
This would mark a significant shift in how legislation is passed in Washington. The filibuster has previously been targeted by both parties, most notably when Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid scrapped it for judicial nominations. Republicans followed suit, using the tactic to confirm conservative Supreme Court justices with a simple majority.

Walz’s progressive stances have not been without controversy. During a recent interview with Fox News anchor Shannon Bream, Walz was pressed on Minnesota’s far-left abortion laws. Bream questioned Walz on whether he would support unlimited abortion access nationwide, referencing a state law he signed that allows abortion through all nine months of pregnancy.
“You signed a bill that makes it legal through all nine months. Is that a position you think Democrats should advocate for nationally?” Bream asked. Walz defended his position by pointing to the restoration of Roe v. Wade as his campaign’s official stance, though Bream was quick to point out that Minnesota’s law goes beyond the original 1972 decision.
“What you signed is there’s not a single limit through nine months of pregnancy. Roe had a trimester framework that did have limits through the pregnancy. The Minnesota law does not have that,” Bream emphasized.
As Walz continues to campaign alongside Vice President Harris, his radical proposals are sure to fuel debate about the future of America’s political system. Whether voters will embrace his vision for a transformed democracy remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Walz’s plans have the potential to reshape the country in ways not seen in decades.
