Pete Buttigieg Suspends Private Drones in NC Flood Zone

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg recently ordered the suspension of private drone flights in North Carolina’s Hurricane Helene disaster zone, sparking a wave of backlash from residents and citizens offering aid. The deadly hurricane has already claimed the lives of at least 94 people in the western part of the state, with hundreds more still missing. With communities desperate for assistance, private drones have become a crucial lifeline for delivering essential supplies like insulin and baby formula to areas cut off by the floodwaters. But rather than support these grassroots rescue efforts, the Biden administration, led by Buttigieg’s Department of Transportation (DOT), initially sought to ground private drone operations.

A tweet posted by the DOT read, “Drone pilots: Do not fly your drone near or around rescue and recovery efforts for Hurricane Helene. Interfering with emergency response operations impacts search and rescue operations on the ground.” The announcement swiftly met with outrage, with many on social media questioning the logic behind restricting these flights, especially when federal aid efforts have been slow to reach those in need.

One user encapsulated the frustration by stating, “The USDOT and FAA don’t know drones are saving lives and aiding rescue efforts by flying insulin to inaccessible regions, locating trapped and isolated individuals, and providing imagery to the world.” Another pointed out, “Oh, this is so damn stupid. People are getting baby formula, insulin, and food this way after being without help from our federal government for six days.”
