But now, as we look to 2024, the question arises: Are Democrats genuinely focused on mobilizing overseas voters, or are they attempting to leverage flaws in the voter registration system? The DNC’s strategy has raised red flags for those concerned about the integrity of the upcoming election.
According to a memo released by the DNC in August, Democrats plan to secure up to 9 million overseas votes by Election Day 2024. The memo outlines a six-figure investment aimed at registering overseas voters, particularly in battleground states. “For the first time ever in a Presidential cycle, the DNC is investing in Democrats Abroad,” the memo reads, emphasizing their goal to reach every potential voter.
However, these figures seem dubious. The U.S. government estimates that only about 4.4 million U.S. citizens live overseas, and only 2.8 million of them are of voting age. Even if Democrats managed to register all eligible voters abroad, it’s unlikely they could achieve the 9 million vote target. Reuters recently reported that the DNC plans to spend $300,000 to register 9 million UOCAVA voters, despite the fact that only 2.8 million are eligible. As The Gateway Pundit aptly put it, “Democrats want you to believe that over half of those eligible overseas voters have residence in the crucial swing states! That is absurd!”
One of the major concerns surrounding UOCAVA voting is the ease of the registration process. Unlike domestic voters, UOCAVA voters can register online without providing key identification documents like a social security number or driver’s license. This lack of verification has led some to worry about the potential for fraudulent registrations.
A screenshot from the Democrat-funded website VoteFromAbroad.org shows how easy it is for overseas voters to bypass the ID verification process. Critics argue that this could open the door to foreign nationals or other ineligible individuals casting ballots in U.S. elections.
Adding to the concern is the fact that UOCAVA voters are not required to prove they have ever lived at the address they list when registering to vote. According to the Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP), overseas voters can claim any address as their domicile, “even if you have not physically been present at that address.” This leaves the system vulnerable to abuse, as there is no mechanism in place to verify the legitimacy of the addresses provided by overseas voters.
This issue was particularly glaring in Michigan during the 2020 election, where data revealed that 25,857 UOCAVA voters were registered as citizens returning to the U.S. during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, by April 2021, 25,308 of these voters were mysteriously switched to non-UOCAVA status, raising questions about the legitimacy of their registrations.
Democrats are betting big on overseas voters in 2024, but the flaws in the UOCAVA registration system could present serious election integrity concerns. As The Gateway Pundit pointed out, “The DNC is doing the work to win this election by reaching out to voters regardless of where they live.”
With electronic ballot returns allowed in some states and minimal verification required for overseas voters, the potential for manipulation seems clear. As Heather Honey, an investigator with Verity Vote, emphasized during a media conference, “Verification of information is the law.” Yet, with the relaxed requirements for UOCAVA voters, it’s unclear how effectively states will be able to verify these registrations.
As Republicans watch closely, the question remains: Will Democrats’ push to register millions of overseas voters be enough to tip the balance in their favor in 2024? And more importantly, will the integrity of the election be upheld in the process? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure—both sides are gearing up for what could be one of the most contentious elections in U.S. history.
