Despite the backlash, ABC News was quick to deny any wrongdoing. “Absolutely not,” an ABC News spokesperson told The Daily Beast when asked if Harris had been provided with the debate questions beforehand. The spokesperson also emphasized that no contact had occurred between the moderators and Harris’s aides. However, the denial did little to quell the suspicions of many who believed that the debate was rigged in Harris’s favor.
Adding fuel to the fire, some have pointed out Harris’s close ties to key figures at ABC. Critics highlighted the fact that debate moderator Linsey Davis is a member of the same sorority as Harris, a relationship that was never disclosed by the network. While the sorority connection alone may not be enough to prove bias, it has raised questions about the transparency and impartiality of the moderators.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times after the debate, Davis reportedly discussed how she and Muir coordinated their efforts to shield Harris from tough questions, which further inflamed accusations of favoritism.
The controversy has sparked a growing chorus of voices calling for a full investigation into ABC’s handling of the debate. Among them is former Clinton advisor and pollster Mark Penn, who urged ABC to conduct a thorough internal review.
“I actually think they should do a full internal investigation, hire an outside law firm. I don’t know how much of this was planned in advance,” Penn stated during a recent appearance on the “John Solomon Reports” podcast. He also suggested that an independent party should examine internal communications within ABC to determine if there was any premeditated effort to favor Harris in the debate.
“The day after, suspicion here is really quite high, and I think a review of all their internal texts and emails really should be done by an independent party to find out to what extent they were planning on, in effect, you know, fact-checking just one candidate and in effect, rigging the outcome of this debate,” Penn added.
President Trump was quick to weigh in on the matter, announcing that he would not participate in any future debates against Kamala Harris if ABC is involved. Citing what he described as a “rigged” debate, Trump expressed his frustration with the network’s handling of the event and the perceived bias of the moderators.
While ABC has continued to deny the allegations, the calls for transparency and accountability are unlikely to fade away anytime soon. With trust in media already at a low point, this controversy threatens to further erode public confidence in the fairness of presidential debates.
As the 2024 election cycle heats up, both candidates and voters will be watching closely to see how networks like ABC handle future debates—and whether any significant changes are made to ensure impartiality in the process.
