On the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Americans were given yet another reminder of how disconnected their ruling class has become. A glaring example came in the form of an email from John Kirby, White House National Security Council communications adviser, that was mistakenly sent to Fox News. In the message, Kirby dismissed the concerns of veterans critical of President Biden’s disastrous 2021 Afghanistan withdrawal as nothing more than the complaints of “a ‘handful’ of vets.”
“Obviously no use in responding. A ‘handful’ of vets indeed and all of one stripe,” Kirby wrote, unintentionally revealing his disregard for these veterans’ perspectives.

This mistake exposes the mindset of the political elite, who often seem indifferent to the voices of those who have sacrificed the most. In this case, Kirby’s response makes it clear he, and likely others within the administration, feel they can safely ignore veterans’ concerns when it comes to the botched Afghanistan withdrawal.
